In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, airlines are limiting in-flight and lounge dining service offerings in order to reduce contact points between travelers and employees. Due to these recent changes, Delta Air Lines has 200,000 pounds of food that would go to waste.
Delta is donating more than 200,000 pounds of perishable and non-perishable goods to hospitals, food banks and other charitable organizations around the world. The food, which would have been served onboard Delta flights and in Delta Sky Clubs, would have expired before it could be served to customers.
Delta worked with non-profit organization Feeding America and its partner agencies across the country on this donation. Delta also worked with food service partners Linton Hopkins, Newrest and Sodexo to provide resources for supporting local communities in cities including Philadelphia, Los Angeles, New York and Atlanta. The airline is also taking care of its own Customer Care center staff by sending them meal boxes while they respond to an unprecedented number of customer calls.
In addition to the food donation, Delta is giving back in other ways. In March, the airline began providing free flights to medical professionals on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic and started manufacturing face shields for hospital workers.
