Visiting a zoo should be about more than just looking at animals. It is important to patronize zoos with a mission of conservation, education and research. Support zoos that support animals by visiting these options around the United States.
Alaska Zoo is ideal for viewing animals you would not see in the continental United States. Arctic, sub-Arctic and like-climate species live at the zoo. Located in Anchorage, it is the only zoo in Alaska.
The non-profit Austin Zoo assists animals in need of rescue and rehabilitation. The zoo is accredited by the Zoological Association of America. Enjoy an up-close experience with more than 300 rescued animals across 100 different species.
Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium
The zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and is a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums. It is home to North America’s largest indoor rainforest and the world’s largest indoor desert, located under the world’s largest geodesic dome.
This California zoo focuses on housing endangered animals and protecting them from extinction. The zoo also partners with other zoos, conservation scientists and government agencies around the world on conservation projects. Temporarily closed due to COVID-19 restrictions, the zoo is normally open every day of the year, rain or shine.
The St. Louis Zoo is home to more than 13,000 animals across 555 species. The zoo is one of the few in the United States offering visitors free admission. It is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and has been recognized for its dedication to animal care, conservation and research.
