Eastern State Penitentiary announced Halloween Nights, a new iteration of its Halloween celebration for 2021. From the creators of its Terror Behind the Walls, Halloween Nights at Eastern State Penitentiary transforms abandoned cellblocks and courtyards into newly designed immersive environments, featuring large-scale video projections and other special effects. Sections of the complex will be open to the public for the first time ever.

The festival-style event will consist of 15 attractions, including two haunted houses (which can be bypassed). There are also four immersive walkthrough experiences, two live performances, four themed bars and lounges, and laser shows, alongside a highlights audio tour of the penitentiary narrated by Steve Buscemi.

“We are excited to finally reveal Halloween Nights, a plan more than a year in the making, and we can’t wait for the world to experience it this fall,” said Brett Bertolino, vice president and director of operations, Eastern State Penitentiary. “There is truly something for everyone at Halloween Nights, including diehard Terror Behind the Walls fans as well as those who’d prefer a less scary, but still fun, fall experience. Our new festival model allows guests to choose their own path, to spend more time exploring freely, and to celebrate the Halloween season in the completely unique setting that is Eastern State Penitentiary.”

Eastern State Penitentiary was once the most famous prison in the world. Today, its Gothic, 30-foot-high fortress walls protect crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. Halloween Nights will take visitors to cellblocks, exercise yards, workshops, outdoor courtyards and hidden nooks, with nearly every inch of the complex activated. A guided, flashlight walking tour of the prison’s hospital wing will also be on offer, and guests can peruse the two award-winning exhibits on criminal justice today, as well.

Halloween Nights at Eastern State Penitentiary will be open select nights, Sept. 24–Nov. 13. Tickets start at $34 and are available online.
