With 2021 coming to a close, Priceline analyzed Americans’ travel habits throughout the year and released predictions for trends in 2022.
Priceline travelers flew more than 4.5 trillion miles in 2021. Long weekends were among the most popular travel times for Americans. The busiest travel day for flights was the Friday before Labor Day. The Sunday before the Fourth of July was the busiest night for hotel bookings. Travelers scored great deals in 2021, with savings up to 27 percent compared to pre-pandemic rates. San Jose, California; San Francisco, California; New York City, New York; Washington, D.C.; and Seattle, Washington, had the biggest percentage drops in hotel rates. Las Vegas was the most popular destination for the second year in a row.
Looking ahead to 2022, Chicago, New Orleans, and Nashville are among the most popular destinations for travel in early 2022. For the first quarter of 2022, the average cost of hotels (18 percent) and airfare (32 percent) are up over the same time last year. Half of the top 10 most affordable destinations for hotels are in the western United States. Hotels in Laughlin, Nevada; Page, Arizona; Buena Park, California; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Reno, Nevada, average less than $110 for nightly rates.
