There is something special about the beach — the smell of saltwater on the breeze and the relaxing sound of the undulating waves as they crash along the shore make it a favorite destination for family travelers. But, for some, navigating the sand to experience the beach is rather difficult.

Oregon’s Tillamook coast recently made an announcement, making the possibility of a beach trip a reality for travelers with mobility issues. Wheelchairs will be available with large, wide, balloon-style wheels to make navigating the sands possible without the chair getting stuck in the sand or toppling over on difficult terrain, such as pebbles or shells.

The chairs allow families to experience the shoreline together so no one has to wait on the sidelines. They are available at several spots along Tillamook County’s shoreline that are popular with locals and visitors, such as the beaches at Pacific City, Manzanita and Rockaway Beach. Beach wheelchairs are also available at state parks and campgrounds, such as Nehalem Bay State Park, Lookout State Park and Barview Jetty County Campground.

The beach wheelchairs are free to use but popular, so beachgoers are strongly encouraged to reserve them ahead of time. Each location handles reservations independently, so be sure to visit here for the reservation phone number for your destination.
