Destinations / Oceania

Australia is known for many great attractions, but perhaps none are quite as famous as the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Queensland. The reef is unquestionably in danger from forces like pollution and global warming, but that doesn’t mean it should be off your family’s bucket list. It is important, however, to approach a trip to this beautiful destination by seeking out ecotourism opportunities teaching children about traveling for good.

Traveling for good refers to taking a positive approach to travel, designed to visit a destination with the goal of leaving the world a little better than the way we found it. By teaching children to travel for good, they will not only discover the beauty in the world around them, but they will also learn to approach it with respect and humility, doing their part to protect and preserve delicate ecosystems, endangered species and historical sites.

Quicksilver Cruises, one of the companies that first brought ecotourism to the Great Barrier Reef, is committed to protecting, preserving and understanding the reef, one of the world’s greatest natural resources. Through embracing best environmental practices and taking a sustainable approach to tourism, they are able to offer experiences letting visitors experience this incredible natural environment without contributing to the area’s decline.

Activities with Quicksilver are suitable for anyone 12 and older. You can book unique experiences like an Ocean Walk, where you don a specially equipped suit that lets you experience diving without having to be an experienced swimmer or diver. You simply walk down a ramp while wearing a full suit and helmet that lets you breathe normally, and a dive instructor takes you on a tour of a portion of the reef and its inhabitants.

The company offers an outer reef cruise and scenic helicopter flights over the reef. But it also has a permanent Underwater Observatory where visitors can go below the surface. This allows you to see firsthand the beautiful corals and marine life making the Great Barrier Reef their home.

During your excursions with Quicksilver, you will get an up-close look at the Great Barrier Reef without causing any harm to the local environment. The company’s expert guides give you an on-site education of what you are seeing, how it impacts the environment and how humans affect the delicate ecosystem. It is this knowledge and a firsthand look at the beautiful reef that turns tourists into eco-travelers who can make positive changes to better the world around them through everything they do.
