A Caribbean vacation is a dream come true for many of us, with tourists heading there for romantic honeymoons and getaways. But travelers with little ones are also discovering the islands of St. John, St. Thomas and St. Croix are ideal for family travel and give visiting families the chance to create lasting memories in one of the world’s most beautiful destinations.
While all three of the U.S. Virgin Island’s main islands have plenty to offer, St. Thomas is one of the best destinations for families thanks to great resort properties and plenty of kid-friendly activities. An endless supply of sandy white beaches makes it a quintessential Caribbean paradise, but if you are looking for the perfect choice for a family-friendly day at the beach, head to Magen’s Bay Beach, where calm waters make it an easy choice for swimming with the kids. It is a great spot for snorkeling and spotting wildlife like sea turtles, and you can grab some food from the café there, too.
Along with the quintessential sandy beaches, the island is home to some pretty great attractions for kids of all ages. The Pirates Treasure Museum is a little bit museum, a little bit souvenir shop and a lot of interactive fun. You can explore the collection of artifacts recovered from local shipwrecks; hear the fascinating history of the pirates who once frequented these islands and their surrounding waters; and learn about the technology that goes into locating, rescuing and preserving these artifacts.
The Virgin Islands Children’s Museum is a great stop where little ones can learn and have fun through discovery and play. This interactive museum, closed on Mondays and limits visitors to 100 at a time, offers special programing for kids of all ages, like Toddler Tuesdays, and is a great place for kids to be kids and discover the world around them.
A great way to see the island is by taking the SkyRide to Paradise Point. This suspended tram ride carries passengers all the way to Paradise Point, one of the island’s most iconic viewpoints. The ride itself is great fun for kids and adults alike and, once there, you are treated to breathtaking views of the island’s port town of Charlotte Amalie. Grab a bite to eat at the restaurant or grab souvenirs at one of the shops located there.
