Travel Tips

According to the Food Allergy Research and Education organization, one in 13 American children, under 18 years old, live with at least one food allergy. Having a food allergy, as so many children do, is a medical condition triggering a harmful response in the immune system. More than 170 foods have been reported to cause allergic reactions from milk, eggs and tree nuts to wheat, soy, shellfish, coconut and chocolate.

When triggered, allergic reactions can manifest in a variety of symptoms, from an itchy mouth and hives to more severe reactions such as throat closure and difficulty breathing.

Avoiding food allergies at home can be second nature as you have a routine, speak the language and the people closest to your children may already be aware of the allergy. Traveling a bit outside of your comfort zone can bring on new concerns, so protect your kids from a harmful reaction while traveling with a few helpful tips.

Communication is key. Discuss upcoming trips with your doctor and see if there is any medication or precautions you can take and then stock up on supplies. Expert advice pertaining to your child’s specific allergy can help while planning your family trip.

If you’re traveling with a group, friends or visiting family overseas, make sure you communicate with fellow travelers regarding your child’s allergy. Making sure everyone is in the loop, this will help you feel confident while traveling and eliminate potential danger.

Call ahead to your hotel and make sure they are aware of your child’s allergy and take special precautions upon arrival. Check online for your flight and fill out the food allergy and special request area available on the airline’s site or while at the airport.

While traveling internationally, Food Allergy Translations Cards are a must-have for families with food allergies. You can download the specific translation you need for your trip on your phone or tablet or print the card for easy access while dining at a restaurant or hotel.

FARE also suggests parents pack a kit with necessary medications, including copies of a Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Emergency Care Plan, a check list and extra epinephrine auto-injectors if needed. No matter how far you are from home, having extra devices and medications packed can be a lifesaver.
