Asia

Of all the cities in India, Agra may be the one you’ve seen the most. As the home of the iconic Taj Mahal, Agra fort and countless religious sites, Agra is an easy choice for family travelers. Located in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, Agra showcases incredible Eastern architecture, deep-seeded history and powerful religious sites.

The Taj Mahal has taken on a life of its own in the United States with cheap replicas and casino chains, but the original structure is a stunner. Take a tour with the family and learn of its ancient history, built as a catacomb for the Mughal ruler Shah Jahan’s wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who tragically died in childbirth in 1631.Take in the truly breathtaking views from the sheer size to the tiny, intricate details, like precious stones laid in the stark-white marble. Sit by the reflecting pool in the courtyard for some truly brag-worthy family photos.

Just across the river, another must-see with the kids is the imperial Agra Fort. The UNESCO World Heritage site remains from the Mughal Dynasty, when it once housed the royal family in the 1600s. The structure showcases the city’s past through an extraordinary red-sand stone exterior and striking city views.

One obligatory camel ride away is Amar Singh Gate or head to the pristinely manicured Shahjahan Garden and Taj Gardens or the beauty of Sri Ram Hanuman Mandir, place of worship. Tour the many religious sites in the area by foot or camel before heading to Paradise Park to rest by the Yamuna River. Relax with an impressive lineup of landmarks behind you and the calming river ahead.

On your way back to the city, stop by Jama Masjid, a mosque built in the 1600s by the Shah Jahan family, or head to the Taj Naturewalk for epic views and some more exercise.

Take a break from walking and the heat and hop in a movie at the “talkies” or theaters in town, or get some shopping done at Marble Handicrafts. Shop authentic Indian pottery, marble and handmade goods to ship back home. Enjoy the local culture and some sightseeing in the area.

Again, while in Agra, it wouldn’t be a complete trip to India without stopping by the Sadar Bazaar. The open-air market is a short distance from a bulk of the historic landmarks and is a must-see experience. One thing is for sure, you will be all over the map of Agra by the time your trip has ended.
