Top 6 Handheld Foods to Try in Amsterdam

Listicles

While strolling the Canal District of Amsterdam, indulge in a mobile culinary experience, with a top pick from one of Amsterdam’s best eateries.

Frites

Many French fry stands boast long lines, but the satisfying experience at the end makes the wait well worth it. Try Vlaams Fraterhuis Vleminckx for fresh, homemade fries served in a paper cone, topped with any of the stand’s more than two dozen sauces. You can go with something a little more familiar — ketchup, curry ketchup or mayonnaise — or try your fries with one of the local favorites, like Joppiesaus (think onions and curry) or sauce andalouse (a Belgian invention with mayo, tomatoes and pepper).

Stoopwafels

Two thin Dutch waffles spread with a sticky, sugary filling and sandwiched together — what could make a better morning snack, accompanied by a hot cup of coffee? Stop in just about any bakery in Amsterdam and pick up a fresh stroopwafel, or a pack of several to enjoy throughout your stay. Have time to sit for a spell? Place the cookie over your warm cuppa to heat up the insides and get them all gooey again.

Dutch Cheese

How could you ever turn down the cheese of choice in your travel destination? The Dutch certainly do cheese well. In the Canal District, De Kaaskamer is one of the best little cheese shops around. Pick up a sampling of sliced cheeses to enjoy along with other accompaniments, from crackers and cured meats to wine and olives.

Raw Herring

While not for the seafood averse in your family, the raw herring is a local treat that shouldn’t be missed by the adventurous foodie. Stop by the little outdoor stand of Frans Haringhandel to order a herring sandwich — the raw fish is piled on a soft roll with onions and pickles for a quick bite. Scared of the raw stuff? Kibbeling is the battered and deep-fried version, essentially a fish nugget, served with mayo and lemon.

Oliebollen

If you’re in Amsterdam near New Year’s, grab this seasonal treat from a street vendor before they’re gone! Sugary, deep fried dumplings, sometimes with, sometimes without fruit, it’s like the Dutch equivalent of American fair food.

Bitterballen

A favored pub food, bitterballen is, in essence, a deep-fried meatball. These battered orbs of beef, flour and spices can be had plain or in sandwich form. Instead of smothered in marinara, they’re served alongside dollops of thick, grainy mustard.
