For a romantic picnic site or family travel from San Francisco, head across the bay by ferry and spend a day on Angel Island. Covering the largest natural island in the bay, Angel Island State Park is networked with hiking and biking trails, one of which climbs to the highest point — the summit of Mount Caroline Livermore. From there, get sensational views of the bay and its surroundings.
Sunbathe on the beaches, unpack your lunch at one of the picnic areas, or buy sandwiches from the café. Then, take a tram ride for an open-air sightseeing trip around the island. Learn a bit more about the island with a visit to Angel Island Immigration Museum, known as the Ellis Island of the West. Between 1910 and 1940, more than 500,000 immigrants from across the Pacific were processed through this station. In World War I and II, U.S. troops embarked and returned from Pacific deployment through Angel Island.
Most people go to the island for a day of walking, biking or just enjoying the natural surroundings. You can rent bicycles on the island and camp overnight in the campground (with reservations); boat dockage is available for those who arrive by private boat.
To reach Angel Island from San Francisco, take the Golden Gate Ferry and, from Tiburton, across the bay in Marin County, take the Angel Island-Tiburon Ferry.
