Families find plenty of history and culture in Berlin, but, this November, they can visit the city during a very special time — the first annal Berlin Freedom Week. As Germany’s capital and home of the once divisive Berlin Wall, the city is the ideal location for a week of festivities and events designed to address an issue affecting the entire world. From Nov. 8 to 15, Berlin will host a series of concerts, exhibits, film screenings, lectures, guided tours and exhibits around the city, all focused on topics of democracy, civil rights and civil engagement.
There are already amazing attractions to see throughout the city that shed light on this issue, like Checkpoint Charlie, Brandenburg Gate, Holocaust Museum and the Berlin Wall Memorial. And while you are there, there is an endless list of cultural and family-friendly attractions to round out your visit, like Museum Island. Families can also enjoy fresh air at Tiergarten, a popular park in Berlin, and Berlin Zoo, also known as Zoologischer Garten Berlin, which welcomed a set of twin panda cubs last year.
Freedom Week is also a great time to visit the German Spy Museum, which recently unveiled a laser maze attraction that lets you and the little ones get some Mission Impossible-style training while you explore the world of spies.
Whether you go specifically for Berlin Freedom Week programming or want to simply be in the midst of a historic city during this first historic freedom event, Berlin is a great city to teach the kids about history and culture.
