Museums

The Grove Museum focuses on the preservation of on-site Call-Callins House, built by enslaved craftsmen, as well as education of its historical importance. General admission is free. John G. Riley Center & Museum for African American History & Culture, Inc., hosts exhibits relating to the Reconstruction Era in Tallahassee.

 

Historical Attractions

Visit First Presbyterian Church. Built in 1838, the building still houses an original section set aside for enslaved people attending services. Established in 1887, Florida A&M University is one of more than 100 historically black colleges and universities in the country. The campus houses Meek-Eaton Archives Research Center & Museum. This massive collection features 500,000 archival records and 5,000 artifacts. Stroll down Jefferson Street and view the Civil Rights Heritage Walk. The sidewalk memorial features 16 panels depicting key moments and figures in Tallahassee’s civil rights history.

Neighborhoods

Following the Civil War, many formerly enslaved people settled in the neighborhood known as Frenchtown. Today, the area boasts some original structures as well as preservation efforts.
