March is the perfect time to teach kids about history, more specifically, women’s history, with a trip to Auburn, New York. And it isn’t just because March is Women’s History Month — it’s also the time of year when Harriet Tubman Day is celebrated.
Harriet Tubman may not have been from Auburn, but she chose it to be her home in the later years of her life, eventually passing away there on March 10, 1913. During her time in Auburn, she devoted herself to continuing to fight for freedom and human rights, and to this day the town celebrates her legacy.
Auburn is home to Harriet Tubman National Historic Park, and there is a whole day of free public programming scheduled for March 10 to commemorate the day. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. families can attend special talks, view special exhibits and take part in activities like making (and taking home) inspiration bracelets.
That night, you’ll want to head over to New York State Equal Rights Heritage Center. This is a great place to learn all about Harriet Tubman’s lifetime works, along with the work of many others who helped shape society as we know it today. The center is hosting evening programming for Harriet Tubman Day from 6 to 8 p.m., but it, along with the city of Auburn, is a great place to get to know how women shaped history all year long.
