Caribbean

If your family travels take you to Jamaica, make sure to chase waterfalls. Why stick to the rivers and lakes when you can experience some breathtaking waterfalls?

As one of the island’s best natural attractions, there are numerous gorgeous waterfalls surrounded by serene greenery. No two waterfalls are the same; each has its own unique feature. While some are popular with tourists, others lie off the beaten path. The one thing they have in common? You can swim in them!

Kingston

The Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park and World Heritage site features many different falls accessible by hiking. On your way to the falls, enjoy the diverse flowers and wildlife along the way. To book these experiences, visit the Jamaica Conservation and Development Trust.

Ocho Rios

The Island Gully Falls ‘Blue Hole’ waterfall leads into crystal-clear blue waters and is a crowd-pleaser among visitors and locals alike. The falls got its name because of the unbelievably bright and beautiful turquoise water of the White River, nestled high in the hills of St. Mary. The river offers several sizes of natural swimming pools, caves to explore and a few waterfalls where guests can climb, rope swing and jump.

Dunn’s River Falls, one of Jamaica’s national treasures, is one of the most beautiful spots on the island. At 960 feet tall, the waterfall is a living and growing phenomenon that continuously renews itself from deposits of travertine rock, the result of calcium carbonate from the river flowing over the falls. The small, dome-shaped cataracts are usually associated with thermal spring activity found in limestone caves. These factors, combined with the falls being located by the sea, gives Dunn’s River the distinction of being the only one of its kind in the Caribbean.

Portland

The gorgeous Reach Falls is set in an ecological sanctuary, which helps to ensure its beauty is preserved. The falls were discovered by runaway slaves who sought refuge in the hills of the John Crow Mountains. The entire area is full of caves, but only some are big enough to climb in and explore.

South Coast

YS Falls opened in 1992 and comprises one of Jamaica’s premier nature-based attractions in St. Elizabeth. YS Falls is a seven-tiered waterfall cascading into natural pools, perfect for swimming. Recently, the attraction added canopy rides, which glide from the top of the falls to its base, offering breathtaking views.

Negril

Mayfield Falls boasts multiple waterfalls and natural pools. To find the best spots, book a guided tour with companies such as Chukka Caribbean Adventures. This hidden gem thrives with wildlife and crystal-clear waters. Experience the cool waters of one of the island’s rivers or explore the land on a hike while taking in the beautiful and tranquil landscape. Many of the natural pools have a Jacuzzi-like effect thanks to the churning waters created by the falls.
