If the idea of an all-inclusive resort doesn’t appeal to you — maybe you’re a foodie at heart or you worry you’ll feel stuck at the property — it might be time to give Club Med a try. The French company, which prides itself on its cuisine and vast menu of activities, is gearing up to open a brand-new village, the Club Med Miches Playa Esmeralda, in the Dominican Republic next year.
For one thing, you won’t be inundated with other tourists the way you’re likely to be in hot spots like Punta Cana, about an hour and a half south of the new resort. In fact, Club Med is the first hospitality brand to open a resort in the unspoiled region of Miches, where the 93-acre project is being developed.
For another, Club Med Miches Playa Esmeralda will offer four boutique villages within the resort, one dedicated specifically to families. Called Explorer Cove, this village is serious about fun with kid’s clubs for young guests aged 4 months to 17 years, child-approved land and water sports and family suites so you can all stay and play together. In the evening, families can join the rest of the resort guests for movies under the stars.
The Caribbean Paradise village will also welcome family travelers along with couples, while the other two villages — Archipelago and Emerald Jungle — are for adults only.
Because the resort is being developed on pristine land, Club Med has worked with local government and environmental agencies to minimize its footprint and impact to the region. Every tree removed during construction, for example, will be replanted somewhere else in the region, and the company enacted a no-plastic-straws initiative throughout all of its properties.
Guests will be able to take part in educational mini-sessions at the resort’s community garden on such topics as gardening and recycling.
For off-property fun, guests can take in Laguna Limon, a nature reserve known for its waterfalls; Samana Bay, featuring protected islands with native flora, wildlife and whale watching, and Montana Redonda, with 360-degree panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
What’s more, the village will be part of Club Med’s Exclusive Collection — its first in the Americas — a new category that skews toward travelers looking for a luxury experience, both in terms of accommodations and cuisine.
For the record, the other Exclusive Collection resorts include the Finolhu Villas in the Maldives, the recently opened Cefalu resort in Sicily and the Valmorel Chalets in the French Alps.
