The astonishing tides of the Bay of Fundy offer plenty of experiences for family travelers in Maritime Canada. The newest of these is the chance to eat dinner on the floor of the ocean, seated beneath towering cliffs and tide-carved sea stacks. Return the next day to see your former “dining room” under 40 feet of ocean.
New for the 2024 summer season, Hopewell Rocks Provincial Park will offer an exciting new culinary adventure: a three-course dinner of locally sourced dishes served on the ocean floor. Hopewell Rocks, also called Flowerpot Rocks, are free-standing pillars carved from the eroded cliffs of New Brunswick’s Fundy shore.
The world’s highest tides ebb and flow twice a day, changing the depth by as much as 40 feet each 12 hours. Visitors can walk on the ocean floor and explore these unique sea stacks at low tide or kayak among them when the tide rises. Dinner guests can return to Hopewell Rocks the following day (admission is included with dinner tickets) to see the entire area submerged, with only the tops of the famous rocks visible.
Fundy National Park and the New Brunswick shore have more tidal surprises. In Alma, see boats in the harbor floating at docks and return later to find them standing in mud. The city of Moncton is known for the Tidal Bore, where the tide rushes up the river so fast it forms a wall of water. In Saint John you can stand on a glass bridge to witness the Reversing Falls churning through the chasm below.
