Destinations / North America

Erie, in Northwestern Pennsylvania along the southern shore of Lake Erie, is a great destination for nature lovers, foodies and history buffs. But it’s also a great destination for the under-12 crowd, with plenty of activities and attractions designed with family travelers in mind.

ExpERIEnce, the city’s children’s museum, recently underwent an $18 million renovation, so it’s a must for families with little ones. The museum’s many exhibits and activities focus on STEM learning and encourage creativity. Interactive activities help children develop a better understanding of the world around them and how they fit into it. There are exhibits for all age groups ranging from babies up to middle schoolers, and there is even an exhibit created specifically to teach kids about Lake Erie.

Kids love water parks, and whether visiting Erie in winter or summer, Splash Lagoon Water Park gives them a place to play. Maintained at 84 degrees year-round, the park features different slides and water attractions for every age group, along with arcade games, a rope course, and plenty of options for dining and shopping for souvenirs.

If you wait until summer to visit, your little ones will love visiting Waldameer, a family-run amusement park that has made kids smile for more than 120 years. The park is free to enter — but you’ll have to buy tickets for each ride you want to experience. There are rides and water slides for all ages, so everyone in the family will find something fun to do.
