Family travelers with water-loving members should add Baja California Sur to their travel list. Set against the breathtaking Sierra de la Giganta mountains and the bright waters of the Gulf of California, Loreto, in Baja California Sur, offers an ideal getaway for paddleboard lovers.
Loreto Bay National Marine Park, often known as the “Aquarium of the World” thanks to its unique biodiversity, offers a place for paddleboarders to intimately explore five UNESCO World Heritage site islands and a variety of hidden ocean gems.
The five islands (Carmen, Danzante, Coronados, Montserrat and Santa Catalina) offer paddleboarding experiences, each with its own charm. Paddlers can glide past rugged cliffs, explore secluded beaches and wade through mangroves filled with colorful birds. This protected area is home to vast biodiversity including sea lions, dolphins, vibrant fish and volcanic rocks, all visible through crystal-clear waters.
Local tour operators such as Sea Kayak Adventures and Sea Kayak Baja Mexico offer experiences for all skill levels. Guests can also book a multiday trip where they’ll camp under the stars, explore hidden coves and visit all five islands. Popular itineraries include paddling from Danzante Island to Carmen Island, which provide breathtaking views and opportunities for snorkeling, hiking and scuba diving. If daytrips are more your thing, there are plenty of shorter paddling routes, including sunrise and sunset trips.
