Destinations / North America

The story of Johnny Appleseed is an American classic and one all family travelers should learn. The legendary man who traveled the countryside planting apple seeds is credited for bringing apple trees to much of the Midwest. Whether you grew up singing the song or reading the story, you will enjoy a bit of nostalgia with the family as you travel through Ohio, in the land where he once roamed. The state’s Johnny Appleseed Historic Scenic Byway is a great way to celebrate the man and his legend while you share that adventure with your kids.

The 30-mile-long route follows State Route 39 through Loudonville and Mansfield and connects Mifflin and Malabar Farm State Park along State Route 603. The two stretches of highway intersect, letting you hone in on some of the most beautiful countryside in Ohio where the legendary John “Appleseed” Chapman spent time planting apple seeds and cultivating nurseries.

Scenic byways are known for taking travelers along routes of incredible natural beauty and Johnny Appleseed Byway is no exception. The road leads you through a stunning landscape of forest and farmland, where you’ll pass sites like Native American villages and pioneer settlements, along with several areas where Chapman had landholdings. In Malabar Farm State Park, you’ll find a monument to Johnny Appleseed, while in downtown Loudonville, there is a historic marker, letting you mix history with legend while you enjoy your trip.

As we head toward fall and apple picking season, the timing is perfect for a road trip along this beautiful byway. This late summer excursion with the kids is a great way to wrap up the summer and bond over folklore and nature — not to mention your fill of some delicious apples grown in the land of the infamous Johnny Appleseed.
