Memphis has some big changes coming this spring, and they are the perfect excuse to head to the Home of the Blues. The city is still an iconic destination for music and food, but it is also known for its significance in the history of civil rights and as the home of historic Lorraine Motel and attached National Civil Rights Museum.
That museum has received a much-anticipated addition set to open May 16. The new Legacy Building will be in Legacy Park, directly across from the Lorraine Motel, the site of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King. The opening is timed perfectly to coincide with the museum’s 35th anniversary. This new building will house five distinct exhibits focusing on issues and the ongoing fight for civil rights and equality in America, specifically poverty, education, housing, gender equity and violence.
This year will also see Memphis Art Museum (formerly Brooks Museum of Art) moving into a new location in Downtown Memphis. The Metal Museum, the only museum in the United States dedicated exclusively to the art and craft of fine metalwork, is also moving into a new location at Rust Hall in the city’s Overton Park. While the opening dates for these museums is still under wraps, they are both highly anticipated and will continue to make Memphis an ideal place for families to have a great experience.
