Family travelers aren’t at a loss for islands to choose from when planning a Greek Island vacation, but some islands get more love than others. Those uber-popular islands are pretty awesome, but they also get overcrowded and expensive, and there are some other incredible islands that fly under the radar. Syros, one of the Cycladic islands in the Aegean Sea, is one such place where families can enjoy an incredible island experience.
Syros is a true gem and one gaining popularity in recent years as vacationers discover the beauty, relaxation and fun waiting to be had. Read on to discover the many reasons why the island should be on our next Greek vacation itinerary.
It Has Incredible Family-Friendly Beaches
Like all Greek Islands, the beaches of Syros are spectacular, but it’s the great family-friendly beaches like Galissas Beach that make it the ideal place to visit. This beach, on the island’s west coast, is sheltered and shallow, giving it calm waters perfect for family swimming. In addition, it has plenty of water sports and amenities and is easily accessible by car or bus, so it is the perfect spot for a day at the beach.
It Has a Burgeoning Culinary Scene
Syros is home to a great culinary scene that is quickly gaining attention. From bakeries that serve the island’s famous loukomades (traditional Greek donuts drenched in honey) to tavernas across the island serving homemade dishes and locally caught seafood, the island is known for great food and chefs. You can find something to satisfy everyone in the family, and there are options across the island for every budget, from fancy restaurants to street food stalls.
It Boasts Unexpected Architecture
The island is home to a beautiful blend of architectural styles reflecting various influences on the island’s culture. The port town of Ermoupoli is home to incredible buildings of Venetian and Neoclassical styles that make strolling through town seem like taking a step back in time.
It’s Still Affordable
Islands like Santorini and Mykonos have a reputation for being expensive, but other islands like Paros, which has gotten more and more popular in recent years, are getting increasingly expensive. Syros, on the other hand, offers an affordable option where families can enjoy a hotel stay or a vacation home rental for a fraction of the price of places like Santorini, all without compromising on all the things that make a Greek Island vacation so memorable.
It’s Easy to Get To
Some of the most incredible islands are not easy to get to, and that challenge can sometimes be half the fun, but that isn’t always a good idea when it comes to traveling with family. Sometimes a direct and easy route is best, and direct flights from Athens make Syros an ideal option. If you want the kids to experience the excitement of traveling by boat, ferries also make the island easily accessible, with routes taking less than five hours from Athens.
