Washington, D.C., isn’t just the seat of the country’s government, it’s also a great place for families to enjoy a vacation on a budget. There are so many free things to do in the city, you can keep the whole family entertained and instead devote those hard-earned vacation dollars to great food and luxurious accommodations.
The Smithsonian has 17 different museums and galleries in the country’s capital, and all are free to visit. That means there are plenty of places to learn about history, science and nature without eating into your vacation budget. This includes National Museum of American History, National Air and Space Museum and National Museum of the American Indian.
The Smithsonian system also includes a zoo, National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, and admission to this great attraction is also free. The zoo, open every day except Christmas, works to conserve ecosystems and save species from around the world.
Many of the city’s top attractions can be found along the border of the National Mall, not only home to important sites like the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, but also an outdoor park for strolling in between sites.
The Capitol has remained open despite the government shutdown, with some exceptions (places like Smithsonian museums and visitor centers have been closed but will reopen for business once the shutdown is over). In the meantime, the city is offering up-to-date information from travel experts while the shutdown continues at 800 422 8644 (Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.).
