Kent County Tourism

North America

In the capital of America’s first state, your family has plenty to see and explore. Here are our top picks for your next trip to Dover, Delaware.

Whatever your favorite aspect of history, you’ll find something to catch your eye in First State Heritage Park, known as the first urban “park without boundaries,” as it links sites all over the city. From landmarks to parks to historic taverns, there’s a little bit of everything. The John Bell House is the oldest wooden structure on The Green and is the starting point for many engaging tours, led by interpreters in full costume. At The Old State House, your family can sit within the state legislative chambers and enjoy a free daily tour. Make sure you check out the First State Heritage website for information on special programming and fun events that may coincide with your visit.

There’s no need to be a Delaware native to find something interesting to explore at the Delaware Public Archives. In addition to housing some of the oldest and most interesting documents in the country, the archives also host fascinating exhibits on Delaware’s history and culture. Currently, you’ll find exhibits on Delaware’s historic state fair and the state’s role in World War I.

Take a walk back into music’s past at Johnson Victrola Museum, and learn all about the invention of the victrola and its evolution, making the way for the future of the music industry. This small museum boasts a huge collection of phonographs, plus tons of memorabilia and even a collection of the huge amounts of Nipper products that can be found, depicting the Victor Talking Machine Company’s famous mascot.

Shop

Take a stroll around downtown Dover to find unique boutique shops selling a variety of items. Suds Bar Soap offers natural, from-scratch candles, bath salts and other home and bath products. BLU Vintage is the spot to go for women’s clothing that the brand describes as “coastal to country.” Bel Boutique sells modern and stylish clothing and accessories for women, right in the heart of downtown.

Eat

Make sure you grab breakfast during your stay at a local hot spot. Countrie Eatery serves up down-home favorites — from omelettes to piles of pancakes to the regional breakfast meat, scrapple — alongside great views of Silver Lake. Let the kids visit the ducks on the way out!

For lunch or dinner, Restaurant 55 is known for its fresh burgers and use of locally sourced ingredients, as well as its nice selection of local beers on tap.

Beyond Dover

During your stay in Dover, don’t miss a drive through the rest of Kent County. The area offers plenty of fun for families to enjoy beyond the city limits, ranging from farm visits and beautiful parks, to boat rides and racetracks.
