Listicles

In honor of World Vegan Month, November is the perfect time to explore Philadelphia’s plant-based side. Bring the kids and introduce them to some new cuisine in the City of Brotherly Love.

Now, we know what you’re thinking — but you won’t miss out on the cheesesteaks, there are vegan versions galore available in most neighborhood dive bars, like Bourbon and Branch. Vegans and vegetarians can enjoy a loaded pizza, hearty sandwich, filling “steak” and dessert just as much as the next guy with this foodie- and animal-friendly list.

Blackbird Pizzeria

Stop in either of Blackbird Pizzeria’s locations and choose from a long list of vegetarian and vegan pies, including the Haymaker, made with seitan sausage, vegetables and violife mozzarella. Opt for a calzone filled with violife mozzarella and tofu ricotta.

More in the mood for a filling sandwich? Try the seitan “chicken” parmesan, fried crispy with violife mozzarella and marinara sauce on a baguette, or opt for the Cubano, a citrus-marinated seitan with violife cheese, pickles, mustard, smoked tofu and seitan bacon on a baguette.

Charlie was a Sinner

Part of Center City’s bustling restaurant scene, Charlie was a Sinner offers creative vegan fare. The upscale bar and swanky restaurant boasts plant-based small plates, sharable dishes and unique drinks, from silken tofu and mushroom ramen to potato gnocchi and roasted cauliflower steak. Consider this one for date night or a special night out.

Bar Bombón

Enjoy a vegan family dinner of Puerto Rican fare in a casual setting at Bar Bombón. The cozy space offers vegan tacos, empanadas and fresh juices. Stop in for a seat at the bar as a couple or bring the whole family. It’s also a great stop to pop in the take-out window and dine on the go.

V Street

Enjoy happy hour cocktails, vegan bites and weekend brunch at V Street. The vegan cuisine is internationally inspired, from the za’atar and Brussels sprout salad and Peruvian fries to the Korean fried tempeh tacos and sweet potato ice cream for dessert.

Vedge

Famously a fan favorite in the city, awarded best restaurant in Philadelphia, Vedge is an all-star stop for vegans. The menu offers more than you’ll have time to try, but definitely go all out with a world-class family meal before a show or after a long day of shopping and sightseeing.

There are so many more options in the city, which you can find here. Shop around for some of the best eats for your family and consider going vegan for the day to celebrate the month.

Discover Riviera Maya’s Newest Archaeological Site

It isn’t often a new archaeological site is unveiled for visitors to learn about the past, but that is the case in Riviera Maya. Well, new may not be the best word — after all, these structures date back thousands of years and have been undergoing excavation by archaeologists since the 1990s. But Ichkabal, a Mayan ruin located in Mexico’s Quintana Roo along the Mexican Riviera, is new for family travelers who are finally able to get a glimpse at this spectacular site.
