Already known for its foodie culture, outdoor recreation and agricultural traditions, Las Cruces, New Mexico, may surprise many family travelers with its countless pet-friendly attractions and experiences. At Las Cruces Farmers and Crafts Market, every Saturday, 8:30 a.m.–1 p.m., people and pets can stroll through seven city blocks of stalls selling art, jewelry, fresh produce, handmade items and more. The market also includes food trucks and performers, creating an energetic atmosphere, perfect for leashed and socialized dogs.

For breakfast, head to The Bean at Josefina’s. This coffee shop features a beautiful, pet-friendly front patio. The whole family can enjoy breakfast with freshly made coffee alongside their pet. Other activities in Las Cruces the family and four-legged friend can do together include a walk through historic Old Mesilla. Featuring 19th-century buildings, Mesilla Plaza allows visitors to learn about the history of the area, as well as browse through bookstores, gift shops and even a chocolate store. The calm nature of the plaza is a popular place for those with dogs.

Hungry for lunch? At Spotted Dog Brewery, choose from a variety of classic American dishes and sit outside on the dog-friendly patio. Work off lunch with a hike to Soledad Canyon. This 1.5-hour hike promises scenic views and glimpses of wildlife, including reptiles and desert plants. Those up for a challenge can opt for the Tortugas “A” Mountain hike, a walk featuring spots to enjoy views of the Organ Mountains from one side and the city of Las Cruces from the other.

Las Cruces also boasts not one but two dog parks. Burn Lake Dog Park includes playsets, benches and plenty of room for dogs to play and mingle. Las Cruces Dog Park features trees, fire hydrants and open fields for dogs to run.

Don’t think you can’t have dinner without leaving your dog behind. At Andele’s Dog House, families can indulge in authentic New Mexican food on the outdoor, dog-friendly patio. Complete with strung lights, shade and a fire pit, the lively patio serves as a great spot for pets and families.

Treat yourself and your dog to dessert at Caliche’s Frozen Custard, a local favorite. Order frozen custard and choose from a variety of different toppings. Caliche’s also offers “Poochie cones,” little cones with frozen custard in it for dogs to enjoy. These cones are free and available upon request.

How to Find the Best Gelato (And Spot the Fake Stuff) on Your Travels Through Rome

Rome is a city full of musts for visitors. You must visit the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps. And the list goes on, all the way down to trying gelato. No trip to Rome would be complete without the obligatory sweet treat, and for good reason. Gelato is delicious, refreshing and it comes in every flavor you can imagine. But while you can find it just about everywhere you turn in the Eternal City, it’s important to know not all gelatos are created equal. The city is brimming with fakes, and once you know how to tell the difference, not only will you see the fake stuff everywhere, but you will also refuse to settle for less than authentic.
