Filoli Welcomes New Dambo Trolls

South of San Francisco lies a historic country house and garden known as Filoli; this place has historically welcomed traveling families with its charm and beauty. Recently, however, it has welcomed a few new residents, offering a new reason to explore the grounds. In June, the property welcomed six of Thomas Dambo’s fun and fascinating trolls, where they have taken up temporary residence (until Nov. 10) to watch over the property and give kids of all ages a reason to have fun roaming the gardens and surrounding redwood forest.

The Trolls: Save the Humans exhibit is true to form for Dambo’s trolls, a creative phenomenon sweeping the country as massive troll sculptures made from upcycled materials pop up from coast to coast. These massive sculptures, each designed with a unique pose and personality, represent the intersection of folklore, poetry and sustainability, as well as the connection humans have with the natural world we inhabit.

“I’m so happy my Trolls get to spend some time amongst the giant redwoods at Filoli,” said Dambo. “I spent a day hiking in the forest, and it is a magical place where I know my Trolls will feel at home.” The six trolls join the more than 100 Trolls Dambo has created around the world, all designed to inspire children and adults alike to recognize the importance of sustainability and caring for nature.

Filoli, about 30 miles south of San Francisco, consists of a stately country home and sprawling garden, all surrounded by natural lands, all accessible to the public with a general admission ticket. Dambo’s Trolls are included in the admission, but are tucked away among the redwoods, so finding them all is a great way to get the kids outdoors and excited with a fairytale scavenger hunt-style activity. They can hunt for Ronja Redeye, Rosa Sunfinger, Ibbi Pip, Basse Butler, Kamma Can and Sofus Lotus.

This exhibit at Filoli is the trolls’ first to visit the Redwoods, giving families the perfect reason to visit the San Francisco Peninsula before the trolls move someplace new.
