Destinations / North America

Seattle is always good for a family vacation to the Pacific Northwest because of its plethora of outdoor experiences. But it’s also a great place to plan a skillcation, a trip designed around specific skills or hobbies your family is either interested in learning about or already involved in.

In October, Seattle will host Refract: The Glass Art Experience, a four-day event that will take a deep dive into the art of glass blowing. From Oct. 15 to 18, there will be exhibitions, demonstrations, workshops and immersive experiences showcasing this art form and its connection with the region.

Glass art has been a strong focal point of the art scene in Seattle for decades, which makes the city an ideal place for this event. It is already home to Chihuly Garden & Glass, a museum filled inside and out with the beautiful glass creations of Seattle-based glass artist Dale Chihuly. In fact, the Chihuly Over Venice art project celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2026, and Refract will help honor that milestone.

The city is also home to more than 700 glass artists and more than 100 glass studios and galleries, so you can build onto the Refract experience with more glass-blowing inspiration, classes and experiences during your trip.
