Destinations / North America

The 2024 solar eclipse will pass over parts of Steuben County, New York, on April 8. It’s the perfect opportunity for family travelers to plan a trip to the Finger Lakes destination this spring.

Before or after viewing the solar eclipse, make time for:

Corning Museum of Glass

This museum dedicated to glass art and artifacts is home to the world’s first largest telescope and a space shuttle glass exhibit. The museum’s Innovation Center features an exhibit on the science behind the glass needed for space shuttle windows. Next, head to National Soaring Museum, an aviation museum in nearby Elmira, New York.

Wineries

Take advantage of the Finger Lakes’ many wineries during your visit. Heron Hill Winery on Keuka Lake offers an Eclipse wine series with special red, white and rosé wines. Grab some of the winery’s special eclipse merchandise while you’re there.

Parks

There are several parks in the region, ideal for viewing the eclipse. Stony Brook State Park is open daily and features wide-open spaces for prime eclipse-viewing opportunities. While the park doesn’t offer any special eclipse programming, travelers are welcome to utilize the picnic area and ball field to take in the event. Letchworth State Park, dubbed the Grand Canyon of the East for its large gorge, is another excellent location for experiencing the eclipse. The popular park is open from sunrise to sunset. It’s located within the path of totality, so make sure you arrive early to stake out a spot.
