Travel Tips

If you’ve ever been on a boat of any kind, you’ve either likely experienced sea sickness yourself or had someone in your party endure its not-so-fun symptoms. Family travelers preparing for their first (or next) cruise should prepare for this motion malady should it strike parents or the kids.

Ambassador Cruise Line’s head of operations in the United Kingdom Bob McGowan revealed some of the top ways to combat sea sickness.

Grab Some Fresh Air

Should the water be rough or choppy at any time during your cruise, leave the confines of your cabin and get yourself outside to breathe in the sea air. If it’s safe to do so, venture onto one of the ship’s decks (or, if you cabin has a balcony, try that) and focus on the horizon to readjust to the movement of the boat.

Pack Motion Sickness Pills

The initial motion of a cruise can be unsettling for some, and to get used to the rocking ship, pack some sea sickness medicine from your pharmacy before boarding. If you forgot to pack them, most cruise ships have stores selling sea sickness medicine.

Nibble on Ginger, Eat an Apple

Tucking into an apple or nibbling on some ginger can actually help with motion sickness. While the taste of straight ginger isn’t exactly appetizing, ginger tea is another alternative, as well as ginger tablets or candied ginger.

Avoid Rich Foods

Nausea can be worsened by spicy or greasy foods. Ease your stomach with fresh and light dishes, and be sure to drink plenty of water.

Wichita: The Best Little Big City for Families

Wichita may be the biggest city in Kansas, but, as I walked around town, I couldn’t shake the feeling I was in one of the country’s greatest small towns. Perhaps it was the absence of all the things that serve as constant reminders you are in a large city. Instead of crowds, traffic jams and busy people rushing through life, I found clean, wide-open streets and happy, smiling faces — just the kind of place you want to explore with a family.
