Huntsville, Alabama, Welcomes Families with New Attractions

Huntsville is a perennial family favorite thanks to attractions like NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and U.S. Space and Rocket Center — attractions that helped it earn its nickname of Rocket City.  Recently, however, it added a handful of new reasons for families to visit this great Alabama city on their next vacation.

The city joined the craze sweeping the country when it welcomed Mama Zelda, its first Dambo troll in April. Mama Zelda can be found at Huntsville Botanical Garden where she has taken up residence as the guardian of the Mother Earth Troll Garden. Families can not only enjoy the magnificent sculpture made from recycled materials, but also have fun wandering the living maze. This new troll garden is a permanent exhibit at the botanical gardens, open seven days a week.

The city also recently welcomed Its newest museum, SIGNALS Museum of Information Explosion, also opened this past spring. The museum focuses on the history of how we communicate, and incorporates augmented reality into its exhibits so families get a hands-on introduction to all the ways humans have communicated, starting with the telegraph all the way up to smartphones. The museum (closed on Monday and Tuesday) offers a one-hour tour to give you an in-depth explanation of the technologies that shaped society.

These new attractions are great additions to a city that already has so much to offer families, from public art and live music to great food and, of course, plenty of NASA-themed fun.
