Known as Hawai’i’s gathering place, Oahu is a family-favorite destination welcoming visitors from around the world to experience the spirit of the islands. Stunning landscapes and beautiful beaches are just part of the allure for an island that perfectly blends the laid-back island vibe with all the modern conveniences today’s traveling families look for.
Oahu is also the perfect place for families to experience the rich culture of the islands with a stay at Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and Spa. This resort’s immersive activities are designed to give the whole family an experience sure to resonate, introducing them to experiences not only rich with local culture and heritage, but also fun for every member of the family.
Guests can take part in things like lei-making classes, hula classes and lauhala weaving classes, which teach a traditional method of weaving commonly used to make jewelry. Each of these experiences gives guests insight into Hawaiian culture by teaching various art forms that explore both the history of the island and its cultural roots.
Families are also welcome to attend Paina Waikiki Luau, a cultural performance using traditional music and dance to tell the story of Hawaiian royalty who once called the land the resort is located on home. This luau, which takes place four nights a week, features a special treat for resort guests — a performance by one of the youngest fire-knife dancers in the islands.
More unique experiences at the resort include the new featherwork class that teaches this traditional lei-making technique in partnership with a local third-generation Hawaiian featherwork group, Nā Lima Mili Hulu Noʻeau. Early birds can also learn an ancient practice in the Oli Class, which meets every Wednesday morning at 6 a.m. This class teaches a chanting technique performed on the shore designed to foster the health of the person and of the natural surroundings as a means of welcoming the new day. By learning these traditional techniques, families not only learn about the history of the island and its people, but also learn to appreciate the delicate balance between humans and nature.
Families visiting the resort this summer might also get to witness one of Hawai’i’s endangered monk seal mamas with a new pup. Spring and summer, known as pupping season, are a special time for the whole island as these beloved native marine animals experience a period of vulnerability as they nurture new life. Visitors should be respectful of the local wildlife and give the seals the distance they need to stay safe and comfortable. Be sure the whole family knows not to get any closer than 150 feet and not to feed or bother the seals in any way.
