With many destinations in the line of this spring’s total solar eclipse (April 8) already booked out, family travelers yet to make plans to spot the phenomenon might feel discouraged. But there are still some great spots across the Midwest offering both prime spots to view the total solar eclipse and family-friendly accommodations to make a trip out of it.
Ready to book a trip to see the total solar eclipse? Read on:
Cape Girardeau, Missouri
This region, directly in the path of totality, will have four minutes and six seconds of total eclipse time, one of the longest in the path. This southern Missouri town celebrates the eclipse with viewing parties at Benton Speedway, Town Watch Party and Southeast Missouri State University. Round out your trip with a stay at the brand-new Fairfield Inn & Suites Cape Girardeau.
Indianapolis, Indiana
Easy to reach thanks to its international airport, Indianapolis will receive three minutes and 49 seconds of eclipse view time. For the ultimate view party, head to Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which partnered with NASA for this event. Places to stay the night include Residence Inn Indianapolis Downtown on the Canal, SpringHill Suites Indianapolis Downtown, Courtyard by Marriott Indianapolis at the Capitol, Fairfield Inn & Suites Indianapolis Downtown and TownePlace Suites Indianapolis Downtown.
Conway, Arkansas
Located just 30 minutes north of Little Rock, Conway expects to enjoy three minutes and 53 seconds of totality. The town will also distribute free glasses to visitors and host several public viewing parties. Not sure where to stay? Try Fairfield Inn & Suites Conway, Fairfield Inn & Suites Little Rock Benton and Four Points by Sheraton Little Rock Midtown.
Texarkana, Texas
This location between Dallas and Little Rock lies in the path of totality and is a short drive from Hot Springs National Park, one of two national parks in the path of totality. There’s a few options for hotels, including TownePlace Suites Texarkana and Courtyard by Marriott Texarkana.
Bloomington, Indiana
This Indiana city also sits directly in the path of totality, giving viewers four minutes and two seconds of viewing. The city celebrates the eclipse with a Celestial Spectacle Solar Eclipse Viewing Event, complete with food trucks, a beer garden and live music.
