Holidays tend to get hectic, especially if you are planning family travel, but if your itinerary takes you to Memphis, you’re in luck because the city has plenty of holiday delights in store to make it a special time for the whole family.
With holiday decorations and seasonal menus across town, it won’t be hard to get the family in the holiday spirit in Memphis. Tour local light displays, and be sure to make a stop at Shelby Farms Park for Starry Nights. After the sun goes down, this beautiful park, five times the size of New York’s Central Park, comes alive with beautiful light displays. Simply hop in the car and drive through the park to experience the festive displays. The event runs select nights from Nov. 29 through Dec. 29, and you can enjoy crisp night air on the Walk & Bike event Dec. 17.
During your visit you’ll want to set aside time to visit the historic Peabody Hotel in the charming downtown section of the city. As if a daily parade of ducks isn’t reason enough to visit, there is a famous flock of ducks residing on the rooftop of this beautiful hotel that are paraded to the hotel lobby every morning at 11 a.m. and then back again at 5 p.m. During the holidays, the Peabody boasts an impressive Gingerbread Village, made almost entirely of gingerbread and candy.
A visit to Memphis isn’t complete without a stop at Graceland and, for the holiday season, the property will be decked out in full holiday décor. From Nov. 21 to Dec. 23 families can take special guided tours to get a taste of what Elvis Presley’s family experienced every Christmas. From sparkling blue lights and a nativity scene on the sprawling lawn to Presley family decorations like red velvet drapes and Christmas trees in nearly every room, this historic home gives you a glimpse into the cherished holiday memories of one of America’s most famous entertainers.
