Tekαkαpimək Contact Station, the most recent addition to Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, is designed to reflect the beauty of the local landscape. Locally sourced materials, like Maine cedar shingles, were used to create a place of serenity that features exhibits and viewpoints where you can take in the view of the Wabanaki lands.
Pronounced deh gah-gah bee mook in traditional Penobscot language, the site sits on the traditional homeland of the Penobscot Nation, and is a direct homage to the Wabanaki peoples of Maine, which includes members of the Maliseet, Mdi’ kmaq, Passamaquady and Penobscot nations. The word means “as far as one can see,” and that is precisely what you get. Located deep in the Katahdin Woods atop Lookout Mountain, Tekαkαpimək Contact Station is the perfect place for families into nature and wildlife.
The Contact Station is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., until Nov. 2, when it closes for winter. And if you are a dedicated outdoors family, it’s a great place for camping, and you’ll get an impressive Dark Sky experience while you’re at it.
