Destinations / North America

Looking to bring back the type of family vacation where you don’t need an itinerary, have ample opportunity to relax and can enjoy endless ice cream stops after dinner? According to Hilton’s 2026 Trends Report, family travelers are choosing vacations that let them recreate cherished childhood memories with their own children. The trend, called “recreating memories,” ranked as the third most common reason for leisure travel, and this Southwest Florida destination lets families recreate memories.

On Sanibel Island, Florida, travelers can expect no buildings taller than a palm tree, more bike paths than traffic lights and plenty of protected natural land. What can families do on there?

Trails, Trails and More Trails

More than 25 miles of scenic trails await for the whole family to enjoy. Take in the island’s beauty at a slow pace, whether it be a bike ride, hike or leisurely walk.

Go Biking

You won’t need to worry about renting a car; fit in with the locals and rent bikes at local spots like Billy’s Rentals or Finnimore’s Bike and Beach Rentals.

Hunt for Rare Seashells

Learn more about why the destination is known as “the Seashell Capital of the World” and go hunting for rare shells on Bowman’s Beach. Families can further their shell hunt with an experienced guide on beach walks with Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum.

Visit a National Wildlife Refuge

Head to J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge for peace and quiet. This spot offers beautiful scenery, endless trails, and the best bird and wildlife watching opportunities.

Make for a Shell Museum

At Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum, kids can touch sea stars and explore aquariums at the nation’s only museum dedicated to the marine creatures.

Did Someone Say Ice Cream?

End the day of exploration with a scoop or two from Love Boat Ice Cream, a local favorite since 1967. Guests can choose from more than 50 house-made flavors, like Gator Tracks, salted caramel bacon, pumpkin ginger and Cocoa Caliente. Travelers and locals alike line up after dinner for a chance to get a taste of these delicious flavors.

Wheelchair Assistance in Airports for Older Family Members

Perhaps you are on family travel with an older family member with limited mobility or you’re on crutches from an accident (as I was on a recent trip to Portugal).
