Swiss Alpine Views Just Got Better with New Cableways

Destinations / Europe

Cable cars and lifts that carry skiers and climbers to Alpine heights also carry tourists to some of Europe’s most spectacular viewpoints. Switzerland’s more than 2,400 cableways and mountain lifts form one of the world’s largest alpine transport networks, making it easy to reach panoramic views and high alpine summits across the country.

This year, major upgrades and new summit architecture increase capacity and add new visitor experiences in several of the most popular regions.

On April 2, the Schilthornbahn 20XX Project was completed with the opening of the final cableway section between Birg and the Schilthorn. The modernization more than doubles the capacity and improves access to the 9,744-foot summit. Visitors can now reach the Piz Gloria viewpoint (of James Bond movie fame) more easily for panoramic views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau peaks, in the Bernese Oberland.

The Säntis Cableway, on Mount Säntis in eastern Switzerland, is being replaced by a new, high-capacity panoramic gondola that will welcome its first passengers late this fall.

On Mount Titlis, in the Lucerne Region, the TITLIS Connect cableway provides year-round access to the summit while maintenance of the Titlis Rotair is underway. Construction has begun on TITLIS Tower, at more than 9,842 feet above sea level, and will continue through 2029 with future Titlis Peak Station.

At Aletsch Arena, in the Valais region, new Eggishorn Cable Car will connect Fiescheralp and Eggishorn, accessing one of the most spectacular viewpoints overlooking Aletsch Glacier. The existing lift is being replaced this spring by a modern one, and a new restaurant and a glacier discovery experience will open at the mountain station.
