Festive season officially kicks off in Leipzig, Germany, Nov. 25, and family travelers will find no better way to welcome the holidays than at the city’s historic Christmas market. Open until Dec. 23, Leipzig and the surrounding region shine with more than 300 stalls, musical highlights, festive lights and more.
The market, dating back to 1458, is one of Germany’s oldest and most magical. Occupying the Market Square in front of Old Town Hall, the market features a massive Christmas tree and stage with performances by choirs, musicians and other entertainers. There’s even a nightly trombone performance from Old Town Hall balcony.

Within the market is Naschmarkt, which showcases the Ancient Leipzig Market. Kids can explore medieval crafts and sample freshly baked Handbrot, while parents can taste mead. St. Nicholas Churchyard boasts the iconic Feuerzangenbowle pyramid, where parents can sip festive mulled wine. Kids won’t want to miss a spin on the Salzgässen carousel, designed in the historical style. Augustusplatz, meanwhile, displays Finnish and South Tyrolean villages, and a massive Ferris wheel promises families the best views of the market and city.
The Leipzig Christmas market is open daily, Nov. 25–Dec. 23, Sunday–Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Beyond the iconic Christmas market, Leipzig hosts other festivities this season, perfect for an extended family trip. Many castles, palaces and monasteries don holiday décor, and some even feature small Christmas markets. Colditz Fairytale Castle, for instance, hosts an arts and crafts market, concerts, puppet shows and other Christmas-themed experiences. Rochlitz, an hour south of Leipzig, embraces the season with costumed performances and artisanal crafts.
