Teach Kids the Legacy of Jimmy Carter in Atlanta

Most kids undoubtedly heard of former President Jimmy Carter thanks to history class, but most won’t be very familiar with his life or legacy, considering his presidency ended in 1981. While the country’s 39^th president may no longer be with us, he leaves behind an incredible legacy. A visit to Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta, Georgia, is a great way to teach kids about the man.

The Jimmy Carter Presidential Library is a museum dedicated to the life and work of the former president, who passed away on Dec. 29 shortly after turning 100 years old in October. At the Presidential Library, you and the kids can learn about Carter’s presidency, what daily life was like in the White House during his term, and some of his greatest accomplishments as president.

You’ll be able to visit a life-sized replica of the Oval Office and see important artifacts, like a replica of the Holy Crown of Hungary, a significant symbol of former President Carter’s works to rebuild relations between the United States and Hungary in 1978. While the original crown is on display at Hungarian National Museum in Budapest, the replica on permanent display in Atlanta was gifted to Jimmy Carter on behalf of the United States by the Hungarian government.

Not only will this give kids the chance to learn about former President Carter and his accomplishments, but also about our country’s political system and the inner workings of the White House. While the museum is a great reason to visit Atlanta, there are plenty of other family-friendly attractions to entertain the family while there, like World of Coca Cola, Georgia Aquarium, Legoland Discovery Center and Atlanta Zoo, just to name a few. While summers can get hot and humid, winters are fairly mild and, paired with a beautiful spring and fall, it is a great destination during the off seasons.
