The Christmas Cities Network recently named Vilnius, Lithuania, as European Christmas Capital 2025, honoring the capital city’s dedication to fostering holiday spirit through history, culture and community engagement. Come Christmas, family travelers can expect a plethora of festive experiences and activities in Vilnius.
The city’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, transforms into a winter wonderland with warm illuminated lights, cobblestone streets, the sound of church bells and the smell of traditional holiday treats.
Christmas markets are a big thing in Vilnius, featuring an array of local crafts, culinary delights and seasonal specialties. Families can peruse stalls selling handmade gifts; Lithuanian dishes; and, for parents, mulled wine. These markets also foster a sense of community, hosting charity initiatives like food drives and support for local organizations.
Vilnius’ Christmas tree is also a testament to the city’s creativity, adorned with themes blending Lithuanian culture and history. Past designs on the tree included chess motifs and artistic interpretations of Lithuanian traditions.
Decorations throughout the city also embrace innovation and sustainability, such as energy-efficient LED lights and promoting green mobility.
In addition to Vilnius, Christmas Cities Network also named Noja, Spain, and Celje, Slovenia, as two other European Christmas Cities for 2025.
