Family travel on the road can be stressful for many reasons, from restlessness to boredom to spending too much time on screens in the backseat. But RV road trips foster curiosity in kids and enhance family bonding, so don’t miss out on the opportunity for an RV vacation because of these avoidable stressors and fears.
RV travel experts and THOR Industries’ brand ambassadors Melissa and Lucas Lahr and Bibi & JC Barringer compiled three tips for families about to embark on a RV road trip:
Prioritize Family-Friendly RV Destinations/Activities
According to Melissa and Lucas Lahr, one great family-friendly spot is Charleston, South Carolina. From coastal ecology boat tours to catching blue crab off the docks at their campground and visiting plantations to learn about the history of slavery, the Lahrs mark Charleston as a top spot for RV road-tripping families. Where should families avoid? Big cities aren’t as ideal for RV road trips. Instead, Bibi & JC Barringer recommend heading to national forests, state parks and the coast.
Keep Kids Entertained on Long Drives
Before even getting in the RV, have kids run off their energy outside while you pack. Don’t forget to pack lots of snacks for the drive (ideally low-sugar so they don’t regain this energy). Even on the actual drive, what is a dreaded feat for many can actually be transformed into an opportunity to better connect with kids through fun conversations.
Balance Educational Activities
Many apps exist today to better immerse kids in culture, science and history in a more natural way. For instance, find an app that identifies animals, birds, trees or even rocks to make your trip more interesting and educational.
