Traveling with your four-legged friends? Bringing your pet along has never been easier. For family travelers looking to travel with pets this summer, Lori Teller, DVM and president of the American Veterinary Medical Association, shares some tips to make trips safe and comfortable for both you and your pet:
- Before you book your stay, always make sure to see if pets are allowed. If so, don’t forget to check out the hotel’s pet policy on size and other restrictions.
- Keep your dog’s personality and health in mind when deciding whether to bring them. Sometimes boarding your pet or having a family friend watch them may be less stressful than a road trip and a stay in an unfamiliar place.
- If this is your first time traveling together, pick a destination closer to home for a few days rather than a longer or further trip. This provides more flexibility and gives you an idea of how your pet will act on vacation.
- Make sure your dog is up-to-date on all vaccinations and ask your veterinarian if there are additional vaccines or parasite recommendations to protect against different exposures. Crossing state lines typically requires obtaining a certificate of veterinary inspection in the weeks before your trip. It is also smart to have your veterinarian’s contact information handy in case of an emergency.
- Pack a travel kit for your pooch with water, food, medications, a leash, waste bags and whatever else you may need. Make sure to bring along familiar items such as their bed and favorite toys.
- Try to incorporate your normal routine as much as possible. For example, try feeding them around the same time and taking them out at similar times. Some consistency goes a long way in keeping them comfortable in new environments.
- Keep pet etiquette in mind and keep your pets on a leash in public areas. Don’t leave them unattended in the hotel room for long periods of time and ensure they don’t disturb other guests.
