Door County
Okay, to be honest, Door County is a perfect destination for a family trip any time of year, but fall is a must for families. In Door County, fall colors seem to last a bit longer thanks to the climate — it is one of the last regions in Wisconsin to get its first frost each year. This gives you ample opportunity to enjoy the changing of the leaves while you enjoy family-friendly activities like apple picking, camping, hiking, fishing and exploring the county’s five different state parks.
The Apostle Islands
In the far north of Wisconsin, along the shores of Lake Superior, you’ll find the beautiful Apostle Islands. This collection of islands is a popular tourist destination year-round thanks to an abundance of incredible natural beauty, and fall is no exception. The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, a member of the National Park system, is home to 21 islands; 12 miles of shoreline; and an abundance of wildlife to observe, lighthouses to visit and sea caves to explore. It is ideal for adventurous families who enjoy activities like hiking and kayaking.
Madison
The state’s capital is a laid-back city with a small-town vibe both welcoming and exciting, and fall is a great time to experience it. There are great things to do year-round, like visit Madison’s Children’s Museum, explore Henry Vilas Zoo and visit the beautiful state capital building, but in fall, when air is crisp and seasonal foliage is vibrant, this great destination is particularly charming. Its location is also ideal for visiting nearby family-friendly attractions like House on the Rock in nearby Spring Green, a quirky museum that houses massive collections from the strange to the beautiful and everything in between.
