Louisiana has more to offer family travelers than just well-known spots like New Orleans and Baton Rouge. In fact, some of the lesser-populated areas promise equally enriching experiences. Lake Charles is one such place; ditch crowded beaches and busy cities and opt for airboat rides, alligator sightings and nature exploration.
Here’s why Lake Charles is a great way to introduce kids to the great outdoors:

Port Wonder and Lake Charles Nature Center
This past April, Port Wonder opened to the public, bringing education, entertainment and exploration to families. Port Wonder features two primary attractions: The Children’s Museum of Southwest Louisiana and Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries’ Nature & Science Center. These areas include exhibits about Southwest Louisiana’s unique ecosystems, interactive displays, outdoor play area, touch tanks featuring native species and more.
Alligator and Wildlife Spotting
Head to Cameron Prairie and Lacassine national wildlife refuges, featuring safe and maintained wildlife-viewing platforms for spotting birds. Walk along the trail or drive through to catch a glimpse of alligators.
Holly Beach (a.k.a. The Cajun Riviera)
This low-key, drive-on beach is a great spot for kids to wade, collect shells and picnic. This beach features gentle surf, perfect for families.
Kid-Friendly Fishing Charters
Many captains in Lake Charles offer short, family-oriented excursions in fresh or saltwater. These trips are hands-on, educational and fun, with gear included.
Creole Nature Trail All-American Road
This 180-mile scenic byway traverses marshes, prairies and Gulf beaches. Along the way, you’ll find drivable and stroller-friendly boardwalks, free wildlife viewing, self-guided audio tours, and Creole Nature Trail Adventure Packs available at the visitor center.

Salvaged stays are an emerging trend in travel that let family travelers enjoy a unique way to experience a destination. Rather than staying in a destination’s big-ticket resort hotel or a cookie-cutter vacation rental, travelers look to the world’s repurposed properties, like abandoned mills and defunct train stations-turned-hotels that have found new life. These renovated properties are a lesson in sustainability and give families a chance to discover a unique view of the history of a destination.
