Destinations / Europe

Bulgaria has managed to slip under the radar for many family travelers, but, for those in the know, it is a fascinating country full of culture, history and natural beauty. For families, it is an ideal destination where you can find an affordable vacation with plenty of activity and adventure to make memories that last a lifetime. As you plan your next trip, be sure to keep these great reasons to visit Sofia, the country’s charming capital, in mind.

Check Out the Local Museums
Sofia is known for its many museums representing a range of subject matters, from kid-centric play museums to unusual art and history. Muzeiko offers interactive scientific programming designed specifically for young minds to explore the world around them, while Red Flat Museum introduces the family to what everyday life was like for families living in communist Bulgaria.

Take a Stroll Through the Historic City Center
Sofia dates back to antiquity, with humans inhabiting the area as early as 7.000 B.C., and, during that time, it developed a rich and fascinating history. The result is a city filled with incredible architecture and plenty of places to learn about the city’s changing identity throughout the centuries. A few must-see spots to introduce the family to local history (while taking in the stunning architecture) are St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and Cathedral de Sveta-Nedelya, both located in city center. While there, take a leisurely walk down Vitosha Boulevard, a popular pedestrian street where you can experience a modern version of the city and spend several hours exploring the shops, tasting the local flavors in a café or simply enjoying the fresh air while the family stretches their legs.

Discover the City Through its Many Parks
Sofia is one of those cities that seems to have been designed with families in mind with plenty of parks located throughout. Many parts of the city are walkable, giving you a great opportunity to discover the true feel for daily life and discover its hidden nuances, and the fact there are parks scattered throughout ensures you can always give the kids a play break if they tire of seeing sites. Borisova Gradina, the city’s oldest and most popular park, features wide open spaces for strolling; plenty of nature within the city; and a great playground for the little ones, giving you a nice break from a day of sightseeing and the kids a chance to burn off some energy.
