No family travel to San Antonio is complete without a trip to the Alamo. Rich with both culture and history, the Alamo is one of the most significant sites in the country and the ultimate symbol of patriotism. Despite the site’s age (dating back to 1718), there is plenty new going on, so even if think you’ve already been there and done that, make sure to put the Alamo on your next San Antonio itinerary to check out the latest happenings and upgrades.
The Alamo is in the middle of a multiyear upgrade designed to preserve and enhance the site. This epic renovation plan includes restoration of the main buildings, including the church and the long barrack. In addition, there are a few new additions to the Alamo complex that will create a more meaningful visitor experience.
The new Ralston Family Collections Center, opened in March, is the first of many enhancements visitors can expect from the Alamo’s planned transformation. This center features more than 500 priceless artifacts relating to the Alamo’s storied history, including the personal collection of British pop star Phil Collins, donated to the state of Texas to help preserve the site’s history.
The collection also includes items from the Donald and Louise Yena Spanish Colonial Collection, along with several interactive exhibits. In the future, these collections will be moved to Alamo Visitor Center and Museum, the culmination of the restoration plan, scheduled for completion in 2026.
During the restoration process, the Alamo will remain open to visitors, and you will be able to see the progress firsthand.
