Destinations / North America

As National Hispanic Heritage Month wraps up for 2023, there have been many ways to explore the extraordinary nuances of the culture from parades to music and film festivals, but there is no reason the celebration needs to end. Hispanic Heritage Month honors and respects people of Hispanic heritage and their contributions to the United States. Thanks to great attractions like the many museums dedicated to Hispanic heritage, the exploration and discovery of this incredible culture can continue year-round.

California is home to several museums  showcasing the lives and contributions of those who have helped shape the state’s multicultural identity. The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art and Culture of the Riverside Art Museum is one of the newest additions to the state’s museum repertoire and was created to feature artwork of Mexican-American artists and craftsmen.

Born of a partnership between actor and comedian Cheech Marin and the Riverside Art Museum, this center features the personal collection of Marin, one of the nation’s leading collectors of Chicano art. Located in the heart of downtown Riverside and adjacent to the historic Mission Inn, a local cultural hub for Southern California, the Center was designed with a model of education and visitor engagement to help foster future generations of Chicano artists to share their culture and heritage with the world.

The Bowers Museum in Santa Ana is located in the heart of Southern California’s Orange County. This lovely museum is small but impactful. Exhibits are housed in a Spanish-style building representative of traditional Southern California architecture, and the exhibits and programs largely feature the works and contributions of Hispanic people who have helped make California what it is today. From exhibitions to events that include art classes, lections and craft fairs, California’s rich cultural history is explored at every turn.

The Latino Museum of History, Art and Culture, also known as La Plaza de Cultura y Artes, is a cultural center in Los Angeles connecting the city with its Hispanic roots. The grounds are home to an exhibition center, beautiful gardens and a theater where visitors can not only view artwork and photographs portraying and interpreting the city’s cultural, social and political history, but also experience live performances, film festivals and interactive, hands-on experiences like classes for making traditional tamales and how to decorate sugar skulls for Día de Los Muertos.

While this is only a small sampling of ways to experience Hispanic heritage in California, these museums each offer a glimpse into a fascinating culture that has helped define the world around us.
