Halloween is practically a rite of passage for many of us —costumes, candy, trick-or-treating and ghost stories are just some of the ways the spooky season gives us fond memories lasting a lifetime. This October, embark on a family-friendly tour Halloween-style.

Rail Explorers, a pedal-powered rail car tour company, offers seasonal tours at many of its locations around the country. Its Track or Treat tour, offered in Rhode Island, lets the whole family enjoy a ride in the crisp fall air while the kids get to stop along the way for some trick-or-treating, hot cider and s’mores.

For a bit of a spookier experience, the company’s New York location in Cooperstown offers the Count Trackular’s Spooky Halloween Tour. With a hand-held lantern to keep shadows at bay, guests are treated to ghost stories of reportedly real hauntings of the local area. The route is decorated for the season and, although the stories are meant to scare, they are kid-friendly, so the whole experience is fun for all ages.

If you want to explore a historic city with plenty of haunted history, head to Savannah, Georgia, for The Witching Hour’s Savannah Ghost Tour. This tour takes you to some of the city’s most haunted sites, shares stories just scary enough (but not too scary) for kids and even dives into the use of paranormal equipment used for looking for proof of real hauntings.

New Orleans, known as one of the most haunted cities in the country, never fails to disappoint, especially when it comes to family-friendly experiences for Halloween. Unique NOLA Tours offers the Spooky Family Ghost Tour, specializing in a family-friendly approach to the haunted history of the city’s infamous French Quarter. Unique storytelling, paired with stops at the city’s most notorious sites of unexplained phenomena, create an experience spooky enough to bring Halloween thrills without the nightmares of a horror movie or theme park haunted maze.
