Constructed in 1502, St. Mary’s Church is a Roman Catholic church and one of the world’s largest brick churches. The building’s vaulting is especially a standout for its details, as well as Gdánsk astronomical clock, a 15th-century clock restored in 2019. The clock shows the time and date, position of the moon and sun in relation to the zodiac signs, phase of the moon, and calendar of saints. Gdánsk sits at the mouth of the Motława River, and a ferry has operated across the river here since 1687. In the Bronze Age, Gdànsk was an important hub for amber trade and sat along the Amber Road. Even today, amber processing remains an important part of the local economy, with most of the world’s amber deposits located along the Baltic Coast. At the entrance to Artus Court at Long Market is Neptune’s Fountain, a 17th-century masterpiece. An earlier version was made to have the god of the seas bow his head to the residence of the Polish kings.
