Travel Tips

The holidays are a hectic time of year, especially when you’re on the road. When your family is counting on you to make sure travel plans go smoothly, nothing (or no one) gets left behind and everyone has fun, keeping up a cheerful holiday spirit can get pretty tough. Whether your family is traveling far from home or just on the go from place to place, it’s important to keep the holiday spirit alive. After all, the holidays are a special time to enjoy the ones you love and make memories that last a lifetime, so make the extra effort to make sure everyone gets to enjoy them, including you.

Spend time together. Sometimes we get so carried away with making sure we see every aunt, uncle and long-lost cousin we forget to pay attention to the ones closest to us. Make sure to carve out a little “us” time to enjoy being together, no matter where you are.

Honor your family traditions, no matter where you are — just because you’re not at home doesn’t mean you can’t do the things your family enjoys during the holidays. After all, it’s the little traditions that make holidays with the family so meaningful.

If your family enjoys looking at holiday lights, find a holiday light display in the town you are visiting. Every town has one — that neighborhood that lights up the entire block so their display can be seen from space. Simply ask a local for directions and make time to take the family to see it. If your family enjoys decorating the tree together but you’re staying in a hotel, bring along a few favorite decorations and make your room feel a little homier, even if for just one night.

Have a favorite cookie recipe but you’re staying in someone else’s house? Bring it along and ask your host to let you use the kitchen to bake up some treats everyone will enjoy. Planning ahead is key to maintaining that holiday spirit no matter how stressed out your holiday travel can make you.

No matter how busy you get, stop to remember what you are thankful for. The hustle and bustle of holiday travel can make it easy to lose sight of that holiday spirit. When you take time out to remind yourself — and your family — what the holidays mean to you, you will find that holiday spirit is renewed. Sometimes a little reminder is all we need to ground ourselves and remember the holidays are actually about family.
